NEW MATERIAL:Demethylmaytansinoid compounds of formula I (X is Cl or H; R1 is H, acyl). USE:Antimildew and antiprotozoal. Antitumorigenic agent. They have low toxicity. They also are useful as synthetic intermeidates of medicines. PREPARATION:A microorganism that belongs to Bacillus, Streptomyces or Actynomyces, capable of converting the methoxy group in the 20 position of a maytansinoid of formula II into hydroxyl group, or its treated product is brought into contact with a maytansinoid compound of formula II to form title compound of formula I. The microoranism is, e.g., Bacillus megaterium (IFO-12108) and the concentration of the compound in the reaction mixture is preferably 1-20 microgram/ml, the temperature is 20-50 deg.C and the pH is suitably 5-10. The reaction is effected under standing or shaking or air-passing or stirring. |
