The ashtray has a bowl moulded from plastics, the rear side being thickened and extended outwards to form a stop; this holds the bowl when pressed into an opening in the vehicle bodywork. The lid fits over this bowl, to blend with the bodywork and has a hinge at the rear. A tongue or pawl fits into the space between the bowl wall and the extended rear side. This co-operates with the lid to form a spring detent mechanism which holds the lid in the open or in the closed position.
