In a new process for the selective chlorination or bromination of an aliphatic ether or ketone having >=2 H-atoms capable of being successively replaced by Cl or Br, the ether or ketone is reacted with Cl2 or Br2 in a reaction zone comprising the distn. head of a distn. system in which the ether or ketone is boiled under reflux. The distn. and reflux conditions are so adjusted that the required partially chlorinated or brominated prod. is continuously removed from the reaction zone as a relatively high-boiling component. Used for prodn. of partially halogenated ethers or ketones useful e.g. as intermediates for cpds. with anaesthetic properties.
