The crank shaft and connecting rod mechanism is used to convert reciprocal linear piston motion into shaft rotation, being utilised with four stroke internal combustion engines. The effective offset of the crank-pin, i.e. securing the connecting rod to the crank shaft, is varied in a predetermined manner throughout the cycle, thus, improving efficiency. The crank-pin trajectory takes the form of a closed noncircular loop with two circular sections which effect temporary piston arrest, and the crank-pin offset may increase during piston descent and vice versa. In detail the crank arm may be in two pieces which guide two slides connected by the crank-pin, the slides locating rollers guided by grooves in the engine block.
|
