In this coin-operated gaming machine, for the purpose of reducing the number of mechanical or electromechanical constructional parts subject to wear, all the symbols of a playing field (16) which are assigned to an address memory are successively activated via electronic components by means of a microprocessor. At the same time, different sequence times can be preselected for each of the individual symbol sequences (11-15). A predetermined program generates random numbers for each symbol sequence (11-15), the individual symbols of each symbol sequence being activated intermittently. The symbol corresponding to the random number determined is successively stored in a microprocessor for the individual symbol sequences (11-15) and is held optically on the playing field (16). At the end of play, if a win combination is present, the win corresponding to this is added in the credit unit and the amount spent for playing the game is subtracted. Preferably, each symbol sequence (11-15) is represented on the playing field (16) by an annular series of luminous symbols, only one of which lights up at a time. As a result of the intermittent activation of the symbols of each symbol series, the lit-up symbol appears to rotate, different rotation times being preselectable for the various symbol sequences. <IMAGE>
