Liquid crystal display device - has cell with hermetically sealed double refractive crystal layer giving two out of phase reflected beams

The liquid crystal display has a liquid crystal layer (12) hermetically sealed between two plates (4, 6) connected by a frame (7). Also between the plates are front electrodes (8, 9) and rear electrodes (11). The liquid crystals are double refractive and with their axes in the plane of the plates. The crystals can be scanned by two different beams (13, 14) which pass through a polariser (1), and the rotating polarised light is directed onto a mirror (3) which reverses the direction of polarisation. This rotating polarised beam is then passed backwards through the cell and is linearly polarised. The two beams have a phase difference which is between given limits.
