Moisture reservoir comprises a layer of granular or plate-like expanded aluminium silicate, pref. of calcium-aluminium silicate. The layer is pref. located below the surface and is impregnated with fertilizers or nutritive salts. The layer may be shipped and installed within a wrapping having at least one surface or moisture-pervious fibrous fleece. A silicate container with a perforated cover and sides may be fitted within a planter and a filler pipe may extend through the soil in to the container. Granular silicate may be mixed with the soil.
