The engine has a camshaft with four cams. Each cam has two followers (19) opposite each other which work corresponding valves on opposed cylinders. The valves (2, 3) in each cylinder are inclined at an angle to the centreline (6) of the cylinder. Each is operated by a rocker arm (17, 18) from a push rod (15, 16) which is moved by the cam follower (19). Each rocker arm is pivoted on a pin (22) which is held in the arms (23, 24) of a forked lug (21). The lug is set in the cylinder head at an angle to the cylinder centreline so that the rocker arm swings in the plane of the valve.
