Method of treating an austenitic stainless steel wall and percussive apparatus to carry out this method. The metal is cold-hammered by means of a percussive apparatus whose tool (2) terminates in a spherical part (1) of very hard steel, the diameter of which is greater than 2 mm, preferably between 6 and 8 mm, the tool (2) being directed perpendicularly to the wall. The metal exhibits, especially in the underlying layers of the skin, compressive stresses, thereby making it possible, in the presence of corrosive agents and tensile stresses in operation, to avoid the risks of this metal cracking. Application in large-sized piping in the nuclear industry.

|
