A shock absorber (15) is provided in apparatus (10) supplying a continuous web to a machine and preventing excessive shock to the web on starting and stopping. The shock absorber comprises a guide roller mounted by arms (55) to a sleeve (45) rotatable through a limited angle about a fixed shaft.
