NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I: (R<1> is H or lower alkyl group; R<2> is H, lower alkyl, lower alkanoyl, benzoyl group, etc.; R<3> is H or halogen), and its salt. EXAMPLE:8-( 1-Piperazinyl )-6,7-dihydro-1-oxo-1H,5H-benzo[ ij ]quinolizine-2-carboxylic acid. USE:Antibacterials effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa and hemolytic streptococci. PROCESS:A compound of formula II: (R<4> is halogen, lower alkanesulfonyloxy group, etc.) is reacted with a compound of formula III to give the objective compound of formula I. The compound of formula II: (R<4> is not halogen) is novel, and obtained by cyclizing and hydrolyzing the reaction product of a compound of formula V: (R<6> is lower alkyl) with an intermediate, prepared from a compound of formula IV and a compound of the formula R<5>X (R<5> is lower alkanesulfonyl, etc.; X is halogen). |
