DMF (I) is prepd. by reacting a methylamine mixt., pref. contg. essentially mono- and tri-methylamine, with CO in the presence of metallic iron or an iron cpd. as catalyst. The molar ratio of tri- to mono- methylamine is 0.3-10, (0.5-5). Dimethylamine may also be present in a molar ratio to the other methylamines of 0.1-2. (I) is produced from mono- and tri- methylamine which are the by-prods. formed during the synthesis of dimethylamine (II) from MeOH and NH3. These cpds. are of less commercial significance than (II) and are usually recycled in the synthesis.
