A coupling device for tyre chains comprises two relatively movable coupling members (1,3 and 3 min ) for receiving chain links and a releasable locking mechanism (7) for one of the coupling members in the form of a hook (1) which is movable into a release position under the force of the attached chain. The members (3,3 min ) are respectively attached to spindles (13) having oppositely handed threads and cooperating with a double nut (6) which is rotatable by a sleeve 10. A bifurcate clevis (2) spans the hook (1) opening and is releasably connected to the hook (1) which is shaped to provide a lever arm (x) between the pivot point (4) and the chain engagement point (16). The hook (1) extends beyond the pivot point (4) and the extension (15) is locked by a sleeve (7) slidably mounted on the device. The other pivoted member (3 min ) has a fork end and an indexing bolt (12) mounted across the fork end. A ratchet (23) may be provided for rotating the double nut 6 for use when high tensioning loads are involved.
