An apparatus for an instantaneous thermonechanical start on the surface of a ferrous metal workipece comprises the steps of contacting a preselected spot on the surface where the scarfing reaction is carried out with the end o a ferrous metal wire which has been preheated to its ignition temp. in an oxygen atm., and simultaneously impinging high intensity jet of oxygen gas on the surface at a point of about 1 to 15cm behind the spot, causing an instantaneous scarfing reaction to begin and a molten puddle to form on the spot.
