Brushless energy transmission to rotating machine - using fixed and rotating encapsulated coils esp. for sensor supplies and is designed for optimum power transfer

Electrical energy transmission is to a rotating machine without the use of brushes. The technique is especially suitable for transmitting power to sensors on the rotor of the machine. The energy source (10) is coupled via a power amplifier (12) to a winding (14) on the machine stator which is closely spaced to a similar winding (24) on the rotor (29) providing a transformer effect. Both coils are encapsulated, the space between them being kept very small. The effects of large metal masses close to the windings can be minimised by the use of high permeability screens concentrating the flux in the air-gap. Power transfer can be optimised by transformers (16, 30) and or sensors (17, 27) in the supply to the stator winding and in the rotor circuit.
