The machine severs (2) the stem of each tobacco plant when growing. The plant is held in the vertical position and guided between flat belts (3) which transport it upwards, still in the vertical position, at the forward speed of the machine. This conveyor is in three sections, the first two (3) comprising pairs of flat belts (5, 6, 7, 8) opposite each other and running over angled rollers (9, 10, 11), the centre roller (10) being common to the two sections. The third section (4) comprises one pair of belts (13, 17) only, the plants dropping onto standard belt conveyors (16) for storage horizontally.
