A method for the manufacture of a synthetic linear polymer comprises heating a polymer-forming reaction mass under pressure to convert the mass into a polymer capable of undergoing further conversion to a higher molecular weight polymer with the elimination of water of reaction, and wherein the partially converted product is continuously conducted in a stationary heated enclosure having an outlet, against the inside of the said enclosure in a swirling manner to maintain an unfilled vapour space within said swirling product, conducting the swirling product to the outlet of the heated enclosure, and conducting the expelled water of reaction in the said vapour state substantially countercurrent to the product. The exemplified polymer is polyhexamethylene adipamide.
