Continuous quenching of hot metal wire - in narrow slot traversed by high velocity cooling water

Metal wires are quenched continuously from a high temp. by passing through a narrow channel of rectangular section in a cooling chamber. A jet of cooling water reaches a velocity of >=10 m/s as it flows around the wire in the channel at right angles to the direction of motion of the wires. Efficiency is so high that metal wires can be chilled quickly and continuously from temp. as high as 800-1000 degrees C.
