[Also in Group XXIX] A machine for use as a pump, motor or compressor comprises a plurality of rotatable cylinder blocks supported by stationary cylindrical valves eccentrically mounted on a stationary valve shaft, said cylinder blocks housing " radial " pistons which drivingly engage a common rotatable ring surrounding the cylinder blocks, and the parts of the suction and pressure ducts serving the cylinder blocks being relatively angularly displaced so that the pressures acting on the common ring are partly or entirely balanced. In the embodiment shown, three cylinder block assemblies are mounted on eccentrics 46, 48 and 50 of a valve shaft 38, the cross-sectional area of the pistons in the central block 54 being double that of the pistons in the outer blocks 52, 56. The pistons are locked in engagement with the ring 32, a drive shaft being connected to the ring through an end plate 36. The ducts 68, 72 within the valve shaft communicate with ports 66 and 70 respectively in the valves. The suction and pressure parts in the central valve 48 face in the opposite direction to the corresponding ports in the valves 46, 50. In a valve shaft construction, Figs. 7, 8 and 9 (not shown), for three units, the eccentric valve portions are formed on a sleeve surrounding a central shaft. In a construction, Figs. 10, 11 and 12 (not shown), for four units the two inner units are mounted on a common eccentric and act in the opposite sense to the outer units, the individual eccentrics being removably located on a shaft and linked together by interlocking means. |
