The binder for the briquette consists of a mixt. of hydrocarbons with high molecular wt., where the mixt. contains min. 80% carbon. In melting iron carbon alloys for mfg. cast iron, elements such as e.g. Si, C, Mn, and P must be added to the melt, and are normally added as pre-alloys or cpds. made into briquettes. The conventional binder for such briquettes consists of cement, lime, and/or clay, but these materials require energy for their melting and also alter the compsn. of the slag in cupolas, rotary furnaces etc.. The invention replaces such binder by a mixt. of hydrocarbons.
