The line spacing mechanism for an electric typewriter includes a forked arm with an upper arm controlling forwards movement and a lower arm for backwards movement. These are connected by a hinge to a switching lever one side and to a toothed ratchet wheel on the other side. This wheel is secured by a spindle to an L-shaped control lever. On the switching lever side is a bell crank lever(21) connected by a lever(26) to an operating key, and with a return spring attached. Between the forked arm and the ratchet wheel is a stepped plate rotating about an axis at right angles to the ratchet wheel axis, acting between the forked arms. The bell crank lever has rod shaped springs passing through holes through flanged parts of the forked arms.
