Non-destructive inspection of welded seams, esp. on pipes - using two ultrasonic probes, each located by cardan mounting on slide moved along overhead rail

The pipe may have a straight longitudinal, or a helical seam, and an ultrasonic testing probe is located on each side of the seam for locating longitudinal and/or transverse welding defects. Each probe is located via a cardan mounting on a slide driven along a rail. The rail is located on a horizontal pivot shaft at one end of a carrier arm which is mounted on another horizontal pivot provided on an overhead frame. The pipe travels past the ultrasonic probes. The two slides can pref. be clamped on the rail via screws, and threaded spindles mounted on blocks fitted on the rail are pref. used for accurate location of the slides and therefore of the probes. Used e.g. for the rapid inspection of a large dia. steel pipe.
