A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator generates an electrical discharge by means of a piezo-electric crystal. The crystal is located in a housing 5 and is caused to be struck by a trigger 2 to give a discharge which is passed via conductors 3, 4 to a resistor- capacitor network, which may be adjustable, in a chamber 6, and thence to an electrode 7 having a rounded skin-controlling end. A discharge pulse duration of 15 to 50 microseconds, preferably 20, with an energy of about 0.93 mJ at a voltage of 8 to 12 kilovolts may be generated. Reference is also made to an alternative generator comprising a capacitor charged via a transformer by a battery-powered transistor circuit. <IMAGE>
