1,214,882. Production of acrylonitrile. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G., and ERDOLCHEMIE G.m.b.H. 23 Aug., 1968 [7 Sept., 1967], No. 40441/68. Heading C2C. In a process for the production of acrylonitrile from propylene, oxygen and ammonia the reaction gases leaving the reactor which, in addition to acrylonitrile, hydrocyanic acid and acetonitrile, also contain ammonia and highboiling and polymeric organic compounds, are passed through a washer containing a saturated solution of ammonium sulphate and sulphuric acid and, optionally, crystalline ammonium sulphate, the ammonia from the fed gas being combined in the form of ammonium sulphate, whilst the high-boiling and polymeric compounds are deposited on the surface of the ammonium sulphate solution in the form of a tarry product and the acrylonitrile, hydrocyanic acid and acetonitrile components of the feed gas pass through the ammonium sulphate wash without being absorbed. The ammonium sulphate solution preferably contains from 2 to 5% by wt. of sulphuric acid, and temperature of the gas on entry into the washer is suitably between 70‹ and 250‹ C., whilst the temperature of the washing solution is suitably between 80‹ and 95‹ C. Before entering the ammonium sulphate washer, the reaction gas may be washed with water. |
