An olefin polymerization catalyst is obtained by (A) treating, in the substantial absence of water, (I) solid particles of Mg, Ca, Zn, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni dihalides with (II) an electron donor which is a liquid or gaseous (i) carboxylic acid or ester thereof, (ii) an ether, (iii) a ketone, (iv) an aldehyde, (v) an alcohol, (vi) an acid halide, (vii) a nitrile, (viii) an amine, (ix) a phosphine or (x), probably forming a coordinated complex, (B) heating the treated particles with a halogen compound of Ti (IV), V (IV) or V (V) to bond the halogen compound to the particles and (C) mixing the particles from (B) with an organometallic compound of aluminium or zinc. The product from step (A) may be obtained as a precipitate by adding a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon to a solution of the product in an aliphatic alcohol. An excess of the donor compound may function as a molecular weight modifier component of the catalyst; alternatively hydrogen may advantageously be included. In the very numerous examples, ethylene, propylene, ethylene-propylene and ethylene-butene-1 are polymerized in the presence of (A) (I), e.g. MgCl 2 , MgBr 2 , MgI 2 and their Mn counterparts, (A) (II) a wide range of each of the classes, (B), e.g. TiCl 4 , VOCl 3 , VCl 4 , TiBr 4 , Ti(OC 2 H 5 )Cl 3 and Ti(O-n-C 4 H 9 ) 2 - Cl 2 , and (C) e.g. Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 , Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Br, (C 2 H 5 O)- AlC 2 H 5 Cl and (C 2 H 5 ) 2 Zn. |
