Clamping pressure from member 12 is exerted on winding layers 1, 2 through bracing structures comprising sets of blocks 7 secured at spaced intervals around cylindrical strip members 8, apertures 16 being provided in the cylindrical members 8 so that cooling medium (oil), after flowing up channels between spacer bars 11 arranged between the winding cylinders, can flow radially through the apertures 16 as at 9<SP>1</SP>. The apertures 16 may be oval or rectangular or may result from making the depth of the strip 8 at any point less than that of the adjacent blocks 7 (Fig. 5, not shown). The bracing structures may be machine made in " Venetian blind " form, cut into wedgeshaped strips and bent to the required cylindrical form. Alternatively, the blocks may be secured to the cylinders during construction of the winding. The ends of the spacer bars may fit into radial slots in annular discs. |
