1397256 Treatment of waste gases; sulphuric acid METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG and SUD CHEMIE AG 1 Nov 1972 [24 Nov 1971 5 May 1972] 50446/72 Heading C1A A process for removing organic and/or inorganic sulphur compounds, which are oxidizable to elemental sulphur and/or to sulphur trioxide, and/or organic compounds which are oxidizable to carbon dioxide and water, from waste gases by treating them with dilute sulphuric acid containing peroxydisulphuric acid as an oxidizing agent. The sulphur trioxide produced is absorbed in the dilute sulphuric acid, the elemental sulphur produced is suspended in the acid, the carbon dioxide produced passes into the waste gases and the water produced either passes into the waste gases as vapour or is absorbed by the acid. The peroxydisulphuric acid used is produced by supplying fresh dilute sulphuric acid, free of peroxydisulphuric acid, to an electrolytic process, and the resulting electrolyte acid containing peroxydisulphuric acid, is mixed with the dilute sulphuric acid to provide the acid for treating the gas. The peroxydisulphuric acid and sulphuric acid derived from the sulphur trioxide are withdrawn together with the dilute sulphuric acid after treating the waste gases. The process may be used for removing sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide and sulphuric acid mist from the waste gases from a contact process plant for producing sulphuric acid.
