In a fluid bearing assembly, part of the bearing surface of at least one of the rotating or non- rotating members is provided with grooves. In use, fluid is supplied to the grooves and is passed thereby to the clearance between the rotating and non-rotating members. In an embodiment, a member 2, Fig. 1, having a bore 3, receives a shaft 1 having a number of axial grooves 7 over part of its bearing-surface. Pressurized fluid is supplied to the grooves 7 through a channel 6 in the member 2 and escapes to atmosphere via a clearance 4 between the member 2 and the shaft 1. In another embodiment, a shaft 1, Fig. 2, is provided with sets of right- and left-hand helical-shaped grooves 8 so that, when the shaft 1 rotates in the direction 9, the flow of pressurized fluid is retarded and a driving force is exerted on the shaft. |
