Provided in the welding apparatus (1) is a connection contact (16), into which a component (12), for example a bobbin, to be welded and serving as a fixed electrode (13) can be inserted. The movable counterelectrode (8) is arranged on the armature (6) of an electromagnet (5) with an adjustable stroke. Before the actual welding operation, the counterelectrode (8) is lowered onto the component (12) to be welded. As soon as the winding of the electromagnet (5), preferably a lifting magnet, is excited after a power source (10), preferably a direct-current source, is switched on, the armature is attracted, as a result of which the counterelectrode (8) fastened to the armature (6) is at the same time lifted and an arc is drawn, resulting in a welding bead. Accordingly the arc need not be struck, as a result of which an otherwise relatively high striking voltage is unnecessary, and work can be carried out without shielding gas. <IMAGE>
