In order to avoid an undesired build-up of damping medium on the non-printing regions of the plate cylinder in the damping unit when printing with only a partial covering of the plate cylinder with plates, the surface of the damping roller (5) which interacts with doctor elements (9) is provided with at least one depression (15) for receiving damping medium. Two further damping rollers (2, 3) are connected downstream of the damping roller (5). The depression (15) has the shape of a groove extending from one edge of the roller to the other. The depth of the groove (15) is less in the centre of the damping roller (5) than at the two ends. The damping roller (5) and the damping roller (3) following on in the transporting direction of the damping medium are driven at different speeds by the motors (4, 8). <IMAGE>
