Antiinflammatory corticosteroid fluocortolone cream formulation - contg. fatty acid sorbitan ester, fatty acid mono:glyceride, beeswax, liq. paraffin, petroleum jelly, and water

New corticosteroid-contg. cream contains (a) 0.05-0.5 wt. pts. fluocortolone, (b) 2.5-20 wt. parts fatty acid sorbitan ester and/or a mixt. of fatty acid monoglycerides and fatty acid diglycerides, (c) 1-5 wt. pts. fatty acid monoglycerides, (d) 1-10 wt. pts. beeswax (e) 5-25 wt. pts. liq. paraffin, (f) 25-75 wt. pts. white petroleum jelly, and (g) water. Used in treatment of skin disorders. The formulation gives improved percutaneous absorption by fluocortolone, so that its anti-inflammatory activity is increased. This in turn means that lower fluocortolone concns. can be used, giving rise to a reduction in side effects. The formulation is free from allergenic or irritant materials such as lanolin, preservatives or alcohols, a feature which is esp. important when the cream is used under an occlusive dressing.
