A process for retarding undesirable buildup of polymeric material on the internal surfaces of reactors used in the polymerization of substantially water-insoluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer, particularly vinyl chloride monomer, comprising, introducing sulfur trioxide into the reactor in an amount sufficient to provide at least about 0.045 gram of sulfur trioxide per gallon of reactor volume.
