1346044 Inserting terminals in panels; Shearing AMP Inc 15 Feb 1973 [29 Feb 1972] 7405/73 Addition to 1345861 Headings B3A and B3W Apparatus for severing terminals 2 from a carrier strip 1 and securing the terminals to a panel 63 comprises, a mechanism 54 for intermittently feeding the strip along a feed path to position terminals at a shear block 36, Fig. 5, a U-shaped member or terminal holder 40 comprising an arm 48 serving as a terminal gripping member and an arm 41 joined thereto by a portion 45, the shear block being slidably positioned between the arms against the portion 45, the arm 48 being relatively biased towards the shear block by a spring 44 for gripping a leading terminal of the strip, the shear block 36 co-operating with a shear blade 51 to sever the leading terminal and to position it in the, path of an insertion punch 15. The panel 63, Fig. 2, is placed on an anvil 66 and a ram 9 is driven downwardly. As the ram moves, cam surfaces 23, 24 engage a roller 30 to pivot a lever 25 counter-clockwise, Fig. 4 (not shown). The shear block 36 is thereby moved to the right, Fig. 3, shearing the leading terminal 2 from the strip 1 against the shear blade 51, Fig. 6 (not shown). The sheared terminal is held between edges 52, 53 of the shear blade and shear block by the spring 44 and is positioned over a hole 69 in the panel 63. The punch 15 descends with the ram and grips the terminal as the lever 25 begins to pivot clockwise, thereby holding the terminal and the terminal holder while the shear block 36 is withdrawn clear of the path of the punch. As it travels downwards the punch engages the arm 48 and pushes it out of its path against the bias of the spring 44. When the ram 9 is at the limit of its travel a post portion (4), Fig. 1, (not shown) of the sheared terminal has been inserted in the hole 69 and a plunger 67 in the anvil is depressed against a spring bias. The ram is then retracted returning the parts to their original positions. The feed mechanism 54 is driven by a cam on the ram 9 and indexes the strip 1 in synchronism with movement of the shear block. |
