A polyesteramide is made by condensing at a temperature of from 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. (A) one or more polyalkylene polyamines of the formula H2N(R1NH)nH, where R1 is an alkylene radical having from 2 to 3 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 4, with at least half of (A) being provided by a compound of the above formula when n is 1, (B) salicylic acid or one or more hydroxy monocarboxylic acids of the formula ACROH(CR2)nCOOH, where n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, A is hydrogen or a branched or straight-chain aliphatic radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, aryl radical, aralkyl radical or alkaryl radical, and the substituents R, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or aliphatic radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and (C) one or more polymeric fat acids; the equivalent of amine groups employed being substantially equivalent to the equivalents of carboxylic groups employed; and at least 90 equivalent per cent of the carboxylic acid groups employed being derived from the polymeric fat and hydroxy monocarboxylic acids, with the equivalent ratio of polymeric fat acid to hydroxy monocarboxylic acid being in the range of 88 : 12 to 65 : 35. Polyamines specified are ethylene and propylene diamine, diethylene triamine and triethylene tetramine. Specified hydroxy acids are glycollic, lactic, b -hydroxy propionic, a -hydroxy-n-caproic, b -methylpropyl-hydracrylic, tetramethyl hydroxy acrylic, b -hydroxy-a -diethylbutyric, phenyl glycollic and phenyl lactic acid. Specified polymeric fat acids are those derived from saturated, ethylenically unsaturated and acetylenically unsaturated naturally occurring and synthetic monobasic aliphatic acids containing from 8 to 24 carbon atoms. Modifying agents, e.g. acetic, propionic or azelaic acid may be present in the reaction mixtures. Examples are given. Specification 987,346 is referred to. |
