<p>NEW MATERIAL:Arabinofuranosyl-5-alkylthiouracil of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; R2 is H or acyl). EXAMPLE:2',3',5'-Tri-O-acetylarabinofuranosyl-5-methylthiouracyl. USE:They are expected as an antiviral agent or reagent for biochemical tests. PREPARATION:2',3',5'-Tri-O-acylarabinofuranosyl-5-thiocyanatouracyl of formula II (R3 is acyl) is reduced with a mercapto compound as beta-mercaptoethanol, alkylated with an alkylating agent as methyl iodide, when necessary, removed the protecting groups, thus giving the compound of formula I.
