<p>PURPOSE:To eliminate the formation of edge domains and improve display quality by specifying the way of superposition of upper and lower electrodes according to the initial orientation inclination angle of the liquid crystal molecules on the electrode surfaces and the orientation treatment of the upper and lower electrodes. CONSTITUTION:If in the element having the electrodes 3 of a lower substrate 1 and the electrodes 4 of an upper substrate 2 the initial orientation inclination angle of the liquid crystal molecules 11 on the electrode 3 surface is let alpha0 and when an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal molecules 11 rise in the arrow direction of the electric line of force 10. At this time, orientation discontinuous portions occur at the edge part molecules 11a, 11b, thus edge domains appear.
