Formaldehyde is polymerized in the presence of a solid salt and water as catalyst. Specified solid salts are sodium phosphate, sodium chloride, calcium bromide, magnesium chloride, potassium sulphate or ferricyanide, or tetramethyl ammonium iodide. The salt may be in finely divided form and may be water-soluble. The polymerization may take place at between -80 DEG and +90 DEG C., in the presence of between 0,05 and 0,2% water, in an inert fluid medium such as butane, cyclohexane, heptane, octane, or nitrogen. The salt may be recovered after polymerization by washing with water. Specification 742,097 is referred to. |
