In order that the tip of the consumable electrode body 51 may be disposed approximately centrally in the mould 10 despite the misalign- ment of the axes of the stub 52 and body 51 during welding together, the stub 52 is clamped between clamping jaws carried on a member 62 universally pivoted in a support arm 61 so that the electrode 50 is suspended freely from the arm 61. The jaws of the clamp are pivoted to the member 62 and are biased together by a stack of spring washers, between the arms of the jaws, an hydraulic or pneumatic piston being provided between these arms to release the clamp jaws. The member 63 has a spherical lower surface supported by ball bearings 63 on the arm 61. The mould 10 and support arm 61 are raised and lowered by independent motor driven cable drums 42, 82. The support arm 61 and mould 10 are shown mounted on the same column 30 but they could be mounted on separated columns. Current supply leads 90, 91 are connected to the copper clamp jaws and to a copper bottom plate 92 on which the ingot 55 grows. The electroslag furnace is used to produce steel ingots. |
