Non-consumable metal anodes for use in place of graphiteanodes for electrolysis of brines to form Cl and NaOH are described. The anode are prepd. by coating an elec. conductive substrat(Ti) with a bimetallic oxide having a spinel structure of the formula MxCO3-X O4, where 0 x 1 and M is a metal of group IB, IIB of IIA of the periodic table(Mg, Cu, Zn). The coatings also contain a modifier oxide such as ZrO2
