The liquid-crystal cell (14) has a liquid crystal (10) between two plane-parallel plates (1, 2) which are provided with electrode coatings (3, 4). In order to prevent visibility of the electrode coatings (3, 4) in conjunction with effective protection of the latter against electrochemical attack, they are provided with a plurality of covering coatings (5, 6, 7, 8) which have optical constants calculated using the Fresnel reflection laws. The preferred method consists in spin-coating solutions of suitable compounds onto the plates, which compounds are subsequently decomposed by heating into the finished covering coatings (5, 6, 7, 8). <IMAGE>
