Bolt (2) is operated by a shaft (3) and a knob (4) is on the inside of the door rigidly attached to the shaft. A knob on the outside attached to the shaft through an electrically operated clutch (6). The key in the form of a card (15) with optical or magnetic coding (26), is inserted in a slot (14) and read by a decoder (13). This is compared with a preset code in a control device (16). A switch at the rear of the slot (29) ensures that the control device is only initiated on withdrawal of the key. This prevents accidental leaving of the key in the slot. Eight levels of access are obtainable, for various master and emergency keys. When a new occupier uses his key for the first time, the code is automatically reset so that the previous occupier cannot gain unauthorised access.
