<p>A method and device for causing ignition in a gas planing process for removing workpiece defects in steel rolling mills, which utilizes a high energy beam of electromagnetic radiation directed at the place on a workpiece where ignition is to occur. An optical system, for example using mirrors, may be used to concentrate the heat on the workpiece, and may allow the beam to move along with the workpiece while the part of the workpiece being heated remains stationary relative to the workpiece.
