PURPOSE:To produce a formed polystyrene bead foam covered on its surface with a surface layer formed with a rugged pattern such as crepe, by a method wherein a thermoplastic resin sheet to be the surface layer is vacuum-formed on a metal mold and foamable polystyrene beads are charged in a metal mold cavity and heated. CONSTITUTION:A thermoplastic resin sheet 3 is softened by heating and fitted over the molding surface of a mold 1, and air between the sheet 3 and the mold 1 is evacuated through an evacuation hole 12, to form the surface of the sheet 3 with a rugged pattern such as crepe. With molds 1 and 2 fastened together, foamable polystyrene beads 5 are filled in the cavity through a pipe 21. By introducing steam into a vacant chamber 22 of the mold 2, the beads 5 in the cavity are foamed, to yield an integrally connected formed polystyrene bead foam 5'. With the introduction of steam stopped, cooling water is introduced into the chamber 22 and into cooling pipes 16 in the mold 1. Then, the molds are separated to obtain the object. |
