[Also in Division H5] One bevelled end 1 of a belt 2, e.g. a paper machine felt belt, is joined to its other bevelled end 20 or to the end of another belt by bonding together overlapping areas of the ends 1, 20 with the application of heat, the bonding heat being generated in the overlapping areas by heating means 4 provided in or on the surface of at least one of the areas to be joined. As shown, a jointing medium 3, e.g. polyphenyl chloride and polyphenyl acetate copolymer, is applied to the belt end 1 in which a number of resistance elements 4 are embedded. The belt 2 is temporarily connected to a plate 6 by rivets 5. Copper rods 9, 10 are inserted into two parallel grooves (7), (8), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the underside of the plate 6 which is also provided with inclined bores 11, 12 extending through to the grooves (7), (8), respectively, and through which wires 13, 14, respectively, on the elements 4 pass to extend into the grooves (7), (8) to contact the rods 9, 10. The belt 2 is then fastened to the underside of the plate 6 and to a plate 18 by rivets 19. The end 20 is butted against the end 1 and temporarily secured to the plate 6 by rivets 21. At least one clamp 22 is tightened to exert pressure on a beam 25 over the whole width of the intended joint. The rods 9, 10 are connected to a power source 15 to heat the elements 4 to effect joining after which the clamps 22, the plate 18, the beam 25 and the plate 6 are removed. The protruding ends of the wires 13, 14 are cut off. In a modification (not shown), the elements 4 are replaced by particles of metal in the jointing medium 3 and heat is generated by induction. |
