A consumable sleeve for electro-slag welding consists of a steel tube with outer rings of flux located at fixed distances. The rings are >=2.6mm thick, =200mm long, and are bonded to the tube with a gap of =100mm between the rings; the end-faces of the rings taper from the outer dia. of the tube to the periphery of the ring, i.e. forming truncated cones. As an alternative, the flux can be arranged as a spiral round the tube. Water-glass is used both as a flux binder and to bond the rings to the tube; the sloping end faces of the rings prevents slag (which s fed separately) from lodging on the rings. The thickness of the rings prevents arcing between the sleeve and the plates being welded. |
