Aqueous coating compositions comprise dispersions of colloidal silica in alcohol/water solutions containing partially condensed silanols of formula RSi(OH)3, where R is C1-C3 alkyl, at least 70% of R being CH3, and have pH values between 7.1 and 7.8. The compositions provide abrasion- resistant coatings on substrates. They are prepared by hydrolyzing an alkyltrialkoxysilane or an aryltrialkoxysilane in an aqueous colloidal silica dispersion with suitable adjustment of the pH if necessary. |
