[Also in Division D1] A leather substitute comprises a fleece in which predominately all the fibres are synthetic fibres and throughout which there is uniformly distributed discrete tanned particulate collagen and which is bonded by coagulated synthetic resin or natural rubber and in which the strength of the bond between adjacent fibres is predominately due to said bonding agent. The fibres can be formed of continuous or staple polyamide, polypropylene or polyester fibres, or mixtures thereof. Natural fibres and shrinkable fibres, such as wool, can be included in the fleece. The shrinkable fibres are preferably shrunk with hot air or steam prior to impregnation with binder. The fleece can be formed by carding and cross-lapping. The fleece may be stabilised prior to impregnation by needling, or bonding thermoplastic fibres in the fleece, or by forming the fleece with incompletely set continuous filaments or by wetting the collagen particlescontaining fleece to cause the collagen to swell and stick to fibres. The collagen particles, which may contain some fibrous collagen, can be formed by grinding a tanned or untanned skin or synthetic collagen structure formed by casting or extrusion. The collagen particles can be added to the flecce during carding. The impregnant may be a solution or dispersion of natural rubber or a polyacrylate, polyurethane or isoprene polymer. After coagulation the binder can be cured and vulcanised. The bonded fleece can be tanned with aldehyde. The bonded fleece can be coated with polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, neoprene or a styrene-butadiene copolymer. The coating can be printed or embossed. |
