1515171 Silver oxide cells UNION CARBIDE CORP 24 June 1975 [25 June 1974] 26671/75 Heading H1B An alkaline silver oxide cell comprises a negative electrode 2, a positive electrode 4 including divalent silver oxide, conductive container sections 5, 6, and at least one oxidizable metal strip 10 which contacts the positive electrode and the container section 5 so that the electrochemical reaction of the strip in the presence of electrolyte produces a unipotential discharge. The electrode 4 may comprise AgO alone or a mixture of Ag 2 O and AgO. The container section 5 is made of nickel, nickel-plated steel or stainless steel and the section 6 is made of tin-plated steel, copper-clad stainless steel or gold-plated copper-clad stainless steel. A neoprene or nylon grommet 8 seals the cell and the negative electrode 2 consists of amalgamated zinc containing a gelling agent. An electrolyte of KOH, NaOH or a mixture thereof is absorbed in cellulosic fibres 15 and a separator 3 consisting of a laminate of two outer layers of radiation grafted polyethylene and an inner cellulose layer is provided. The strip 10 is in the form of a ring made of Zn, Cu, Ag, Sn, Cd or P1 and may occupy positions 11, 12 or 13. An insulating disc may be placed in the bottom of the container section 5. In the presence of the electrolyte, the ring causes metallic silver to form where the AgO contacts the container section 5 and the cell discharges at the constant monovalent silver oxide voltage level. |
