1,258,077. Homopolar machines. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 2 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 16983/68. Heading H2A. In a homopolar machine having a rotor sectorially divided into a plurality of conducting paths connected to rings of commutator segments for engagement by brushes which are interconnected so that alternate paths are connected in series, each of the sectors 21 ... 28 in the embodiment shown in Fig. 2a comprises a pair of parallel conducting paths 21a, 21b . . . 28a, 28b, each path being located close to a path in an adjacent sector so as to be closely coupled magnetically thereto whereby the resultant current in each such coupled pair of paths remains constant as the rotor rotates and sparking at the brushes is reduced. The magnetic coupling may be increased by forming each path as a plurality of bars which are interleaved with those of the path in the adjacent sector, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). |
