1,201,596. Coil compacting and bending machines. BOTALAM. 21 March, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 14981/69. Heading B8C. A machine for compacting and binding coils, e.g. steel wire coils 12, has a longitudinal frame 1, a compacting carriage 2 at one end of and slidable on the frame 1 and provided with a coilreceiving cradle 11 fixed to it, and a binding unit 3. The coils 12 are placed on the cradle 11 by e.g. an overhead crane and on operation of a driving means the compacting unit 2 advances towards the binding unit whose mandrel 20 enters the coil and a central cylindrical recess 17, Fig. 4, in the carriage 2. When the coils are compressed to the required extent, each pair of crescent-shape members 49, 50, Fig. 5, closes a path across a respective slot 18, Figs. 1, 4, in the compacting head so that a respective binding wire starting from a supply 58 follows a path 28, 41, 52, 51, 41 and 29 and returns to the binding unit 3 after which the wire is released from the paths 41 by pivotal movement of portions 42 about their pivot pins (44), Fig. 6, (not shown), and the wire is then tightened so that it embraces the inner and outer surfaces of the coil firmly. The two ends of each wire are then twisted by a twisting unit, the excess wire cut away by shear cutters 31 and the ends folded back by forked members 38. The carriage 2 along with the bound coil is then retracted and the cradle 11 tilted by an hydraulic jack (14) so that the coil leaves the cradle 11 under gravity and discharged on a sloping platform (15), Fig. 3 (not shown). The machine may be entirely automatic, semiautomatic or manually-operated. |
